How to check connectivity speed in Linux from shell
Just as there are possibilities to test the speed of Internet connection via www services, it is possible to test the connection speed directly from the Linux shell using a simple script from GitHub, which uses the well-known speedtest.net service. Installation takes a few seconds:
Installation
wget -O speedtest-cli https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sivel/speedtest-cli/master/speedtest.py
chmod +x speedtest-cli
wget - downloads the script
chmod - allows launching the downloaded script
Usage
speedtest-cli nebo ./speddtest-cli
Speedtest-cli will now select its testing server and will proceed with testing upload and download speeds.
It's necessary to realize that the tests are performed with public servers. The server you're testing with may be busy and the results may always not be precise. We recommend running the test multiple times for more precise results.
